Donovan James

The birth of Donovan James on the 20th February 2013.  3.2kg.

The day begun really early my phone rang at 02h20 and Kirsten said her waters had broken!

we left for Ballito soon after that and went to her mum's home for a few hours to see if the contractions would start on their own.

At 14h00 we went into hospital and the Gynaecogolist started a slow induction. No contractions till 17h30 and then the contractions were fast and furious.

Kirsten found the best form of pain management was to lie in the bath and this helped so much.  Within a few hours Kirsten was 7cm.  At the final stage of labour her little boy just did not want to come down. At 01h30 a decision was made to do a c.section and I felt devastated for Kirsten who had laboured without any medication and had got to the last stage only to realize that a c.section was the best way forward.

Little Donovan James was born at 03h30 safe and sound. He was pink and there were no indications why he did not want to birth naturally.

He is a gorgeous baby who stayed on his Mum's chest during the rest of the operation. Skin on skin, delayed cord cutting and he breast fed immediately.

Kirsten you were a STAR!

Having the baby on his Mum's chest skin on skin after birth is the very best you can do for a newborn. No separation anxiety! He stays warm and his Mum is able to bond immediately.
