Birth Stories:

Benjamin Ross

Jess and Andre met me in Durban.  We had a great meeting and had regular chats on the phone and skype.  On the 17th August 2014 Jess and Andre came to Hillcrest Hospital to help as we needed pregnant couples to do a role play for an exam.

That evening I got a call from Jess to say that her waters had broken and she was off to the hospital.  Half an hour before her call I had had a call from another client saying that her labour had begun.  Where was I heading.... Dropped into Jess at Pinetown and she had no contractions yet so I headed off to Ballito where my client s labour stalled.

During the early hours Jess s labour progressed and so I had to call a back up doula to help me.

As dawn arrived I went accross to Pinetown and we worked together with Jess during her strong contractions.   She had a shower, bath and did all the natural positions possible but still the baby would not decend. By lunch time Jess wanted a epidural and after that she felt so much better.  Hours later the baby s head was still too high so the gynaecologist said it was time for a caesarian.

Benjamin Ross was born at 15h00 and I have to say that Andre was the proudest doula Dad of the 2014..  He held Ben and did not want to let him go anywhere.  I went up to the nursery and helped him do skin on skin until Jess was back from theatre.

Well done guys , he is gorgeous.

What I Do

I am living my dream while working with mums and babies. I see mums when they are 34 weeks pregnant and then go to their homes once they go into labour. I stay for the full duration of the labour and after the birth I assist them with breast feeding. I do another visit after the birth to see that all is well and to help where I can.  Mums are always welcome to call me in the event that they have any questions, whether before or after the birth. I am passionate about my work as a doula and I care and love all the families with which I work. Once you have been present at a birth you feel part of the family and it’s wonderful to hear news of the new baby’s life as he or she grows.
