Birth Stories:

Grayson Charles Barnard

Grayson was born at 03h20 on the 28th June 2015.

weighing 3kg and a natural birth.

Kristi was so excitied to have her baby boy that I used to chat to her frequently.  As June approached David and I decided to go to Kruger Park for a week as it was my Big 6 birthday!  What a spoiling... lots of fabulous sightings of lion, leopard, buffalo, hyena, and Ellies. On our last day at the Park I got a call from Kristi to say her mucous plug was out and that she might be in early labour.  I felt so sad as I definitely wanted to be at her labour and birth of her little boy. She told me that she would wait until the following day and I would be home.

So I left Kruger at 04h00 the following morning and headed home which is a 9 hour run!  We chatted on what's app most of the way and everything was good. No huge progress so I felt that I would be with her.

That night we all slept well and the following morning labour started slowly. By 17h00 her contractions were 15 mins apart and Elmarie her midwife and I went over to her home.  The birth pool was warm and ready and after many hours of great determination Kristi went through her stages of labour beautifully.

She was in the warm water and also spent much time on the ball and the loo (which is often a perfectly comfortable seat for labouring).

How it works:

As with all upright positions, toilet sitting uses gravity to encourage effective contractions.

Psychologically, sitting on the toilet allows some women to feel more comfortable if amniotic fluid is dripping or

leaking. It can also help a mother who feels a need to urinate with each contraction.

When to do it:

Toilet sitting can encourage good bearing down and relaxing of the perineum for pushing because the mother is

familiar with bearing down on a toilet. It is also appropriate any time the mother feels most comfortable on the

toilet, such as if she is leaking fluid

Incorporating it into labour:

Have the mother sit backwards on the toilet, leaning against a pillow on the tank or pipes. In this position

, massage her lower back.

Let the mother sit on the toilet with her feet on low stools to widen the pelvic outlet.

Sit in front of the mother, allowing her to lean on you during contractions.

By the early hours of the morning Kristi was exhausted from the days of pre labour that we took her down to the

hospsital and she had her baby with the help of Piticin in two pushes. Grayson and Kristi came home later the

same morning.

What I Do

I am living my dream while working with mums and babies. I see mums when they are 34 weeks pregnant and then go to their homes once they go into labour. I stay for the full duration of the labour and after the birth I assist them with breast feeding. I do another visit after the birth to see that all is well and to help where I can.  Mums are always welcome to call me in the event that they have any questions, whether before or after the birth. I am passionate about my work as a doula and I care and love all the families with which I work. Once you have been present at a birth you feel part of the family and it’s wonderful to hear news of the new baby’s life as he or she grows.
